Box turtle portrait

Back in June 2010 I got a new lens for my Canon dSLR, the nifty fifty (50mm 1.8). That same day I had this very vibrantly colored male eastern box turtle show up in my backyard! He came to eat white mulberries under a tree that had lots of fruit under it. He must have been drunk. I got so close to him and he barely even noticed me…

I’ve been wanted to frame this print for a long time, so I ordered an 8×12″ print of it, which was professionally printed by Mpix.com. The frame was hand made from reclaimed tongue & groove cedar from a 1920s saltbox style house in Barnegat Light. The house was being remodeling several years ago by one of my best friends and I had to save all that I could. It covered all of his walls, so I helped to salvage all that I could (and then some). The frame was sanded and stained a dark brown, then finished with a coat of a boiled linseed oil & beeswax finish. The print is inset in a beveled white mat window and is mounted on foam core board; all acid free for conservation. The back is finished with craft paper and it’s ready to hang.
