Terrarium Stand!

This was such an awesome project! I had a lot of fun making this custom piece of furniture. I was able to use my skills and creativity to put together wood that was tossed out for the trash and turn it into a functional piece that will last decades. I was commissioned to make this stand to hold a large terrarium. It’s 2′ x 3′ x 2′ tall. The stand needs to hold a lot of weight so it’s constructed of old 2×6″ & 2×8″ lumber salvaged from bridge construction projects along the Garden State Parkway and an old pole barn inside a state owned Wildlife Management Area. The top is joined to the sides with pocket screws (I love using the pocket hole screw jig!) so the weight of the terrarium sits on the top which sits right on the sides. It can easy hold over 200 lbs. The front facade is finished with reclaimed yellow pine trim from a house in Barnegat Light.

Another thing requested with the piece was sliding doors. Well, I’ve never made sliding doors and was pleased with how they came out. Both doors were made of scrap wood from my wood shop. Their around 18 x 18″ and slide freely and can be removed for transport or access to the inside of the stand, where a drain pan and misc. terrarium stuff will be housed. I plan to make a whole series of furniture with this type of doors. Next is an entertainment center!
